Top 3 tips for learning to waterstart
Not only is uphalling your windsurfing sail tiring, but it stops you from trying new manoeuvres and progressing in the sport. However once you have mastered the waterstart, it opens the world of windsurfing to you!
Waterstarting can be tiring at first. You will find yourself struggling to swim with the sail, drinking copious amounts of sea or lake water, and when you have finally got yourself onto the board you will be knackered from all of the effort involved.
There are plenty of detailed resources to teach you this manoeuvre on-line, so check out youtube, or buy one of Peter Hearts tuition videos, or see one of the many blogs on learning how to waterstart. However I have written this blog to give you my 3 top tips for you learning this important manoeuvre.
1. Wear a buoyancy aid, wear one of these it will reduce your learning time by 80%!!
I am sure that you are very proud of the fact that you are in the harness and no longer have to wear one of these. However, lose the harness and spend an hour or two in the water. The buoyancy aid will reduce your effort with swimming, and allow you to concentrate on the technique of the waterstart.
2. Lift the sail at the tip of the mast.
Getting the sail out of the water is hard, so swim to the tip of the mast and javelin throw the sail over your shoulder. Then work your way hand over hand till you get to the boom.
3. Let out your back hand
Once you get back onto the board you will be overpowered, therefore let out your back hand and it will release most of the power, and stop you from getting pulled over the front of the board and back in the water!
Learning to waterstart is not necessarily all the fun, but with these tips it will certainly make it much easier!!! Plus once you have learnt the waterstart it will transform your windsurfing!!!!
